I am in a sketching phase. And especially scenes, not things or objects. Scenes like buildings and architecture, streets, les places, small shops. I don’t think I’m particularly good at these type of “scenes”, but I’m having fun! I sometimes feel I will never be a proper artist. I feel too much like a changeling for I have too many phases. Maybe it is the winter. Or the atmosphere in the streets, the lights coming from buildings, the reflection of streetlamps…how can I work alone in my atelier when there is the smell of coffee and hot chocolate in the bars, the intimate talks around candles, the festivity of people with shopping bags in the streets, the creeping deeper into your woolen hat and coat…

My first visit to Paris was in November, and my first strong memory (other than the Metro and Cluny) was the Jardin du Luxembourg… I fell in love!

Oh but you are an artist Ronell. You’re responding to the seasons, moods, events, and the things around you. It doesn’t really matter if you’re out painting in the streets enjoying coffee and other pleasures or in your studio working more contemplatively, all those things are worth translating on to paper with your own unique vision. Yes, you sure are an artist!

Your “changeling” feeling is just part of your being an artist and a creative person, Ronell. As 11 people have already found, today, your responsiveness to life around you and the vivid sketches that arise from it, pick us up and plunk us right down in the middle of France. I enjoyed roaming through your recent sketches from Paris. I love the one of the fountain…you captured the moving water so well! I’m jealous that you are so close to Paris that you can just drop in. I spent a good part of yesterday reliving my trip to France because it was Thanksgiving here in the USA and I was showing my paintings and photos of the trip to family I hadn’t seen since our return. Then I came here and feel like I’m strolling around Paris again. Thanks!

These are lovely, Ronelle, filled with energy and beautiful color. The water in la fontaine de st. sulpice is perfect! I sketched several fountains this summer and always struggled with the falling water. You make it look so natural and easy.
