Another beautiful oldie…
Sunday, after church in Paarl, (the third oldest town in SA), when everybody else was enjoying tea, I sketched out in the heat, until I gave up and fled to the tea as well. So this sketch doesn’t show the lovely new gothic revival architecture of the church, which was built in 1842.
The old Mother church(Moederkerk) in Stellenbosch, with it’s outer buildings with gables and thatched roofs, typical of Cape Dutch architecture. Since 1679, it has been part of the town, established by Simon van der Stel.

What fabulous jewel-like watercolours, so descriptive of those places – you were very productive on your holiday, as well as being sociable!
These are so beautiful. I love the architecture. Interesting how much of it is similar to different parts of Australia – “another beautiful oldie” and “house in Van Riebeeckstreet” are so similar to parts of Adelaide. You have a marvellous ability to bring us the essence, the feeling of the buildings.

Would never have guessed that you’d done your Khyalitsha sketch from photos rather than on site! How fresh and , as Cathy says, jewel-like these are.
My father was born in the eastern Cape and studied/trained in Cape Town. He hasn’t been back in 50 years, but I would love to visit the country someday.

And they just keep coming! Beautiful, Ronell. You really accomplished a tremendous number of sketches. I love your way with buildings. My favourite is actually the simple little Mother Church and of course, the township – wonderful colours. Of course I also love the beautiful old houses.
