February art: Café sketching.

One of my favorite paces to lunge for my sketchbook, is in Cafe Douceur in Beaulieu sur Dordogne. Such a welcoming lieu, you keep drinking coffee just to have an excuse to linger longer.

February art: three men.

I had the opportunity to sit down for a coffee today on the terrace and had some men close-by to sketch. Some people don’t mind to be sketched, but the majority feel uncomfortable with being the subject. Fortunately today’s subjects were so busy with their own thing, they didn’t notice me who was hiding behind a big plant…sort of. I am very rusty on sketching people…there was a time I did it almost every day and now it happens once a year, for exactly the reason I mentioned…getting rebuked by people who don’t want the attention. Nonetheless..I present to you…the three men.all done in moleskin book(which is a little too light for my watery brushstrokes and the colour bled through to the back of the page. I don’t mind bucking pages, but I fiercely dislike colour going seeping through the paper.

Art in February: Tokala the cat.

Hard to believe that February is here. That actually suits me fne. The worst month, January, is over. Now I can start thinking of spring and the garden and planting…

But first I have to get my dried up art process going. February is a perfect month to do just that. I have done several sketches and these two turned out the best. It is Tokala, one of my two beautiful cats, who always remind me of the heather in Scotland.

La Dordogne and a walnut grove: catching autumn colours 4.

The Dordogne is such a beautiful river and with the walnut groves just beside it makes for magnificent scenery, especially in October with its multitude of colour.

I am still doing landscapes “the new way”;, although I am beginning to think it isn’t the real me. My sketches are much more loose and more spontaneous, albeit not always pretty and correct. But it is me. The landscape sketches I am doing lately feels more like small paintings done in sketchbooks. They are much more detailed and take much longer than my usual way of sketching. I am still enjoying it though. Maybe I will find that golden median between sketching like this and my usual style..

A vinyeard and a valley..catching autumn colours 3.

I am having so much fun with these landscape sketches. Making a lot of mistakes, but every now and then, there is a successful stroke or a colour or a line and then I can burst with excitement. Most of these sketches are greens. Our hills are very green and at the moment, all shades of greens and yellows. the moire I sketch, the moire I experiment with green and the more confident I become in mixing greens. where I have always mixed my greens on the paper, I have now switched to mixing puddles of greens on my palette…as I say…I am just having fun!

EDM-art 28-31: birdfeeder, garden ornament, faucet and eggs.

I am quite satisfied with my contribution to EDM. I have done every subject, 31 days. Definitely not  project to do every month, but I am pleased with myself for sticking to it and completing it.

eggs EDMWhat has EDM 2015 meant to me.

  • I have realized once again that drawing every day is essential for developing different skills and keeping them oiled.
  • Drawing every day makes us see the world and every day subjects through different glasses.
  • It forces self discipline.
  • It pushes you to push yourself.
  • It makes an artist work through a problem and not around it.
  • I didn’t always like the theme/subject of the day, but being committed made me do it anyway.
  • Looking back on a completed month of drawing is highly satisfactory.
  • It is inspiring to see others interpretations.
  • The enthusiasm of new comers to drawing and sketching is contagious.
  • New artist friends are made.
  • New directions in expression are considered.
  • More looseness and free strokes/lines creep into work.
  • Perfection lies in the imperfect strokes.
  • Deadlines lead to getting the work done.
  • There is no such thing as “not enough time/don’t have time”.
  • Doing art/drawing/sketching/painting every day is simply fun.
  • The journey supposed to be fun.
